Medical Coder

The Roles Of A Medical Coder

A medical coder is responsible for a large amount of information that is passed through medical offices around the globe. It's one of the 10 fastest growing health occupations, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. And the average salary is $35,000 to $50,000 per year. That's a good salary if you ask me, but you would need to be a certified coder to make that type of salary. As a coder you will review every single patients chart and file it electronically, they will insert the physician observations, prescription history, diagnoses, procedures performed, and much more.

A medical coder course is the most effective way to become a certified coding associate, it will give you the basics of inpatient coding so you will be able to receive that nice salary that I mentioned before. All of these courses can be completed in a few months, up to a year. They prepare you to sit for the national exam and once you pass that exam you will become a certified coding specialist.

This career of medical coding is in very high demand, because coding drives the billing process. The billing is needed in order to receive the proper payment from the insurance companies. Doctor's at one time were performing this task of coding and billing themselves but now because of the increase in duties that fall on the doctor's they are unable to do it. Doctors today need to see more patients and follow much more laws, so they have less time to spend on this, so they must rely on outside help to perform this task for them. When they hire someone to fill this position of a medical coder they want someone who will perform the task as they would, with close attention to details.

There are many other opportunities for employment when you are a certified medical coder. You have the choice of working in hospitals, clinics as well as private doctors offices. Almost all of the insurance companies need a certified coder, so you can see how many opportunities are available to you as a medical coder.

You can take the necessary courses at a local technical school or an online school. If you wanted to you can go to a university and receive a degree in medical coding, this will take you two to four years to complete.
