Throughout a medical coding career you will be faced with the pressures of being completely accurate day after day. Any type of mistake can cause many complications, and can potential cause your employer to pay for your mistake. Besides that a simple mistake can cause you much frustration when you are the one who has to correct it. This type of demand can become very stressful, so you should be aware of this before you spend money to begin your medical coding career. If you can handle this pressure then you will do just fine in this career.

Up coding which will result in overcharging. This will happen if you use improper codes that are fore more complicated procedures that were not even performed. Both of these errors will occur if you are not familiar enough with the proper codes and medical terminology. Taking the proper courses would help to reduce the risk of these errors from ever happening. We are all human and sometimes you will make a mistake simply because it was a mistake and not a lack of knowledge. So if you were to make a mistake you should always address it as quickly as you possibly can. The longer you wait to resolve this the better, because a mistake can result in unnecessary reimbursement delays, and even legal issues. As of right now it will take between 15 to 150 days to get claims paid by private insurance, Medicare/Medicaid, and HMO's, so imagine a delay on 150 days. Your employers rent needs to be paid, your payroll needs to be honored, and equipment needs to be purchased, so a delay can really hurt them. If you have data entry experience already then you are a step ahead of many people that are trying to pursue a medical coding career. This is a large portion of your job requirements. The other portion is knowing the standard medical codes and the laws. That is why it is a good idea to take to proper medical coding courses, it will give you the correct knowledge. You don't need to take these courses but it is best if you want to succeed in this rewarding career, that is currently in high demand. There will be a lot more doors opening for you in your career if you become a certified medical coder.
