I was in the restaurant business for 10 years and there is never any type of advancement, you make the same money that you have been making for years. Yes it's good money I am not going to argue that, but it's hard work with long hours and you are not guaranteed to make the money that you need to make. There are far to many ups and downs with this job. So I needed a change to secure my future for my family, and I wanted more time to devote to them. So I began searching the internet for something that I would be able to do. That's when I medical coding kept popping up everywhere I looked. And I began researching this type of career to find out what it was all about and if I would be able to make a good enough salary. Well, I was pleasantly surprised at what I found, the average medical coder will make $35,000. I would be able to keep my job while I pursued my medical coding education, and the best part is that it would only take up to a year to complete.

Well I completed the courses in only 6 months because working in the restaurant business you can't wait to get out of it as quickly as you possibly can. I took the necessary extra courses in order to finish quicker. I then took my national exam that would give me the title of a Certified Medical Coder, and I passed. I was so excited that I was so close to having a normal work schedule of 40 hours a week of work. Those days of 60 hour work weeks were going to end, and I could not wait. I quickly began submitting my resume to every place that I could and within a month I landed the job that I have been waiting for for 9 years. My starting salary was $28,000 and my first raise will be in 3 months. I never got a raise before, I can't wait.
